Why Chardham Yatra is Best Done by Group Vehicle

The Chardham Yatra covering Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in India. Every year, lakhs of devotees make this spiritual journey through the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. While many travel options exist, most families and groups prefer to travel together in a hired vehicle for comfort, safety, and cost savings.

Travelling as a group keeps everyone on the same schedule, avoids the chaos of booking multiple taxis at hill stations, and ensures a trusted driver handles the mountain roads throughout the journey.

4 dham yatra guide

Dham-by-Dham Breakdown

1. Yamunotri: The First Dham

Located at an altitude of 3,293 metres, Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River. The main temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Vehicles park at Janki Chatti (or Phoolchatti during heavy snowfall), from where pilgrims trek 6 km to the temple. The trek is moderate and takes 2 to 3 hours one-way. Hot springs like Surya Kund are the highlight here, where pilgrims cook rice in the natural hot water.

2. Gangotri: The Second Dham

Gangotri sits at 3,048 metres and is the origin point of the sacred Ganga River. Unlike Yamunotri, vehicles can drive up to the temple town itself, making it accessible for elderly pilgrims. The Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, is stunningly located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. The Ganga Aarti held in the evenings is a deeply moving experience.

3. Kedarnath: The Third Dham

At 3,583 metres, Kedarnath is the most challenging and revered of the four dhams. The Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, cannot be reached by road — pilgrims must either trek 16 km from Gaurikund or take a helicopter from Phata, Sersi, or Guptkashi. The landscape around Kedarnath, rebuilt after the 2013 floods, is breathtaking and spiritually overwhelming.

4. Badrinath: The Fourth and Final Dham

Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is located at 3,133 metres in the Chamoli district. Vehicles can drive all the way to Badrinath town. The nearby Mana Village the last Indian village before the Tibet border and the Vasudhara Falls are must-visit stops. Badrinath also has the famous Tapt Kund, a natural hot spring, where pilgrims bathe before the temple darshan.

Tempo Traveller Permit Tax

Tempo Traveller Permit Tax for Uttarakhand

This is one of the most overlooked aspects of Chardham Yatra bookings. Uttarakhand is an inter-state zone for vehicles registered outside the state, which means additional permit and tax charges apply. Here is what travellers must know about Tempo Traveller Permit Tax when entering Uttarakhand from Delhi:

•       Green Tax: Payable at the Uttarakhand border entry points (Haridwar/Rishikesh). Rates vary by vehicle size approximately ₹500 to ₹1,500 per entry.

•       Tourist Vehicle Permit: Required for commercial tourist vehicles. Operators must carry the permit throughout the journey.

•       Uttarakhand Tourism Fee: Some districts charge a per-day fee for tourist vehicles operating within protected or forest zones.

•       Parking Charges: Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Gangotri zones have regulated vehicle parking areas with daily charges ranging from ₹100 to ₹300.

•       National Park Entry Tax: Applicable if the route passes through Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary boundaries.

Tip: Always ask your vehicle operator to confirm whether all permit and tax charges are included in the quoted price or will be charged separately at the border. Many operators quote a low base price and add taxes later.

What to Look for When Booking

Driver Experience Matters Most

Chardham routes involve narrow mountain roads, hairpin bends, and unpredictable weather. Always verify that your driver has prior Chardham experience, ideally at least 3 to 5 seasons. Ask the operator specifically.

Vehicle Condition Check

For a 2,500 km mountain journey, the vehicle's health is critical. Ask for the vehicle's registration year and last service date. Vehicles older than 8 years should be avoided for this route. Prefer operators who own their fleet rather than outsourcing.

Advance Booking

The Chardham Yatra season (May–June) is peak season and good vehicles book out 2 to 3 months in advance. Do not wait until the last moment, especially for groups of 15 or more.

Package Inclusions to Confirm

•       Driver allowance (DA) for the full trip

•       Toll charges on all highways

•       Hill parking charges at each Dham

•       Permit and green tax at Uttarakhand border

•       Night charges for hill routes

Packing Essentials for Chardham Yatra

The temperature in the Chardham region varies significantly. Badrinath and Kedarnath can be below 5°C even in May. Here is what every pilgrim should carry:

•       Warm woolens, windcheater jacket, and thermal innerwear

•       Comfortable trekking shoes with good grip (for Yamunotri and Kedarnath)

•       Rain poncho or compact umbrella

•       Personal medicines, especially for altitude sickness (Diamox if recommended by doctor)

•       Glucose, dry fruits, and energy bars

•       Power bank and torch

•       Government-issued ID proof (required at several checkpoints)

•       Temple darshan timings: check official Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee website.

Final Word

The Chardham Yatra is not just a trip, it is a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual experience. Going with the right vehicle and the right operator makes a huge difference to both comfort and safety on this demanding route.

For groups of 9 or more pilgrims travelling together, booking a reliable Tempo Traveller on rent in Delhi with an experienced Chardham driver remains the most practical, cost-effective, and spiritually stress-free way to complete all four dhams in a single journey.

Plan early, verify your operator's credentials, confirm all permit charges upfront, and focus entirely on the pilgrimage itself the rest will fall into place.
